WALLINGFORD: 1 Mile - twinned with Bad Wurzach in Germany. This delightful little riverside town is steeped in history and retains much of its charm with period properties and small independant shops and antique businesses. King Alfred, Dick Turpin & Agatha Christie are 3 of the names linked with this historic market town. Visitors can learn about the town's history at Wallingford Museum. A walk around the old castle ruins and along the Thames path is well worthwhile as is a visit to the old Corn Exchange built in 1856 which is now a theatre and cinema. There are a range of independant shops including a number of quality antiques businesses together with a weekly Charter Market and monthly Farmer's Market. HENLEY ON THAMES: 10 Miles - twinned with Leichlingen in Germany. This picturesque market town situated right on the bank of the River Thames is well worth a visit. Famed for the Royal Regatta and more recently the Olympian gold medallist rowers, Steve Redgrave and Matthew Pincent, who now have statues in their honour at the Henley Rowing Museum. Henley is a quintessentially English town with a wonderful array of individual shops, boutiques, cafes, pubs and old historic buildings. The Market Place with its attractive Town Hall and pedestrianised square offers a choice of eateries, and makes for a relaxing place to enjoy a coffee or lunch. There is a weekly market on Thursdays in the square and a monthly Farmers Market which sells wonderful fresh locally sourced produce. Informative guided walks can be arranged through the local Tourist Information Centre which give a detailed account of the town's history.
